How to choose a tyre changer and wheel balancer

Which tyre changer and wheel balancer?

15 May 2019 by Tomasz Szymański

If your customers keep on asking you about the perfect wheel balancer or tyre changer, we got some tips for you. Choosing the right products is key to trouble-free use for many years. So – what are the best tyre changers or wheel balancers available on the market? Let’s think about it.

Choosing the tyre changer

We got lots of equipment to choose from:

  • semi-automatic,
  • fully automatic,
  • with RUNFLAT helper arms,
  • with LEVERLESS arm .

This could be a headache! So, what would be the best bet here? Check our short guide.

Semi-automatic tyre changers

  1. For those on a budget

Semi-automatic tyre changers are just cheaper than the automatic ones. You can save up to a few hundreds of euros while buying gear like that.

2. For occasional use

When is a semi-automatic tyre changer a better choice? It’s a great thing for those who rarely deal with tyre changing or repairs. Essentially, it takes a bit more time to work with the semi-automatic, so it might prove a great match for car mechanics.

3. No downtimes

Plus to that, the semi-automatic would assist in case the main tyre changer breaks down. Even though a properly-maintained equipment should not break down…it happens. In other words, the semi-automatic could be a spare tool, to use during the high season, for instance.

Automatic tyre changers – when are they a better choice?

  1. Perfect choice for the main equipment

If your clients are looking for the main equipment for their company, the automatic is a much better choice. It provides the perfect working comfort, as well as great working pace. To put it shortly, working with automatic tyre changers is much more convenient.

2. How about helper arms?

These are the two most popular types of helper arms:

  • RUNFLAT helper arms,
  • Leverless helper arms.

When is the RUNFLAT helper arm a good choice? Essentially, this should be an equipment that is used in every tyre service. Don’t forget that RUNFLAT tyres are no longer a premium these days. More and more cars have them, as well as low-profile tyres.

Is it possible to work with RUNFLAT tyres without the helper arm? Well, yes. But – what for? There is a risk of damaging the tyre. Plus to that, it’s a waste of time.

Wheel balancer – which is the best?

What to consider while choosing a wheel balancer? These are the most important features:

  • wheel width,
  • wheel diameter,
  • wheel weight.

If you’re working with passenger cars, wheel balancers with wheel width of around 20” would be a good choice. How about the wheel diameter? The minimal value is 24”. These two values would allow to work with most passenger cars.

Cheap wheel balancers and tyre changers – are they a good choice?

Yes. Don’t forget that low price does not necessarily mean poor quality. It’s a good idea to consider the following factors;

  • the materials used,
  • does the seller provide technical support after the purchase.

And one more thing. Don’t forget that it is not always the brand that counts the most. Most tyre service equipment are manufactured in the same factories. You should simply choose the brand that has its own production line in the factory.
