Oil drainers – hot or not?

Oil changes are one of the easiest jobs to be made at a car workshop. There’s no need to write about it. However, there’s one thing that puzzles many mechanics – which oil change method is better? Is it suction – using oil drainer? Or is it gravity method? Let’s talk about it.

Essentially, there are two methods:

  • gravity
  • suction

What are the two about?


It takes a few basic steps:

  1. Opening the hood
  2. Taking out the dipstick
  3. Removing engine cover
  4. Removing oil filter, waiting until the oil goes out. 

Any other steps? Well, this depends on the location of the oil filter.

Gravity method

  1. Removing oil drain plug from the oil pan (ratchet wrench 19”) – push it to the left, slowly and delicately.
  2. Clean the oil filter area with a cloth. 
  3. Put the new oil filter gasket. It might be a good idea to lubricate it with oil.
  4. Put the filter into the casing (writing on the above part)
  5. Put the casing on again (wrenching torques might be different for various cars).
  6. Top it up with fresh oil – not more than 70% (check it on the dipstick).
  7. Turn the engine on for 2-3 minutes so that the oil comes to the filter. 
  8. Check the oil level. Top it up as needed. 

Suction method

1. Open the hood.

2. Take out the dipstick.

3. Remove the engine cover. 

4. Find the probe that fits the hole. Put the probe into the dipstick space – until it reaches the oil pan. 

5. Connect the probe with oil drainer’s cable.

6. Wait until the drainer’s tank becomes full.
