Choosing a Tool Cabinet for Your Workshop

4 September 2024 by Tomasz Szymański

The market for tool cabinets is simply huge. So, when you’re looking for the right solution for yourself, you’re in for a treat. And since you often ask us which tool cabinet to choose, we’ve decided to put together this ranking of tool cabinets. We’ve based it on proposals from the REDATS product range. We compare all the workshop trolleys available in the REDATS range (availability as of 05.06.2024).

Choosing a tool cabinet

You can find more information on how to choose the right tool cabinet in a dedicated blog article, which you can read here:

However, let’s remind ourselves of a few key principles for choosing the right tool cabinet.

Central lock – this will ensure the security of its contentsDrawer size – will allow you to assess whether a given cabinet will actually hold your toolsAnd since size is also important, the load capacity of each drawer – for the same reasons as given above.Equipment – here you have to decide individually what you need.

Ranking of tool cabinets for the workshop

You can choose from both empty tool cabinets and their equivalents filled with ready-to-use equipment. Why would you choose a workshop trolley that doesn’t include any equipment in the price? After all, you have to turn screws with something, right?

And here, contrary to appearances, the answer is not at all obvious. Because it may be that you need a cabinet for your specific, favorite tools. Or you need equipment that will allow you to transport equipment from one place to another – for example, items that you only use once in a while for repairs.

Situations vary.

Nevertheless, in such cases, empty tool cabinets will be perfect. You can easily fill them with your own elements that you need for your work.

Empty workshop trolleys – guide

Let’s move on to the promised comparison of tool cabinets. Below is a ranking of empty workshop trolleys, which we based on 5 models from the REDATS range.

Let’s start with a small tool box – REDATS 9 drawers. Despite its small external dimensions – 600 x 260 x 385 mm (width x depth x height), it can hold a lot. And all thanks to its spacious drawers, which have the following dimensions:

dimensions of 6 drawers: 150 x 225 x 40 (width x depth x height) dimensions of 2 drawers: 511 x 225 x 40 dimensions of 1 drawer: 511 x 225 x 84 So – you can easily fit it where there is a lack of space. It’s more of a toolbox than a cabinet – so it’s perfect when you need to move it from one place to another (e.g. to a car being repaired). And for this purpose it has convenient handles – they will allow you to quickly and easily move the cabinet from one place to another.

The REDATS empty 7-drawer COMPACT Black tool cabinet is another proposal for a workshop trolley that will be perfect for people looking for a spacious tool cabinet. Below are the most important facts about this cabinet: size: 620 x 300 x 785 (width x depth x height) Width inside the drawer: 511 x 278 x 54 (top drawers), Width inside the drawer: 511 x 278 x 84 (bottom 5 drawers), Smaller drawer – 10kg, Larger drawer – 15kg, Top shelf – 90kg.

You can also build a set from these cabinets – like  And in this way you get 16 drawers 🙂 This can be an interesting solution as furniture in a place where you will really keep all your tools.

You can also choose from two other tool cabinets 6 drawers 7 drawers Actually it’s the same model, the only difference is the number of drawers.Which tool cabinet to choose?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer here. Everything depends on a few factors how much space you have in your workshop how much you want to spend what you are looking for – a toolbox or a trolley If we look only at the criterion of space needed to place the cabinet, then this model definitely wins – REDATS empty 9-drawer toolbox Black – it is basically a toolbox that you can easily move from place to place by the handles. This proposal is also the cheapest of all the models in this category – as of 05.06.20

Currently, REDATS offers two cabinets with full tool equipment: 196 elements 420 elements You often ask us which one to choose. Is it really worth paying extra and going for a workshop trolley equipped with 420 elements? We assume the following division:The 196-element workshop trolley is recommended primarily for typical mechanics. Its spacious drawers contain the elements necessary for car repairs – sockets, extensions, ratchets and the like. The 420-element tool cabinet, on the other hand, will be useful not only for mechanics, but also for electrical work. It also contains insulated tools.

So which one to choose?

The answer depends on your individual needs. If you are a mechanic and you mainly need tools for car repairs, then the 196-element trolley will be a good choice for you. It contains all the necessary tools and is at a more affordable price.

However, if you also do electrical work or you want to have a wider range of tools at your disposal, then the 420-element cabinet will be a better choice. It contains more tools, including insulated tools, which will be useful for electrical work.

Here is a table summarizing the key differences between the two cabinets:

Feature196-element trolley420-element cabinet
Number of tools196420
Type of toolsMainly for mechanicsFor mechanics and electrical work
PriceMore affordableMore expensive

Ultimately, the decision of which cabinet to choose is up to you. Consider your individual needs and budget when making your decision.

Here are some additional factors to consider:

  • The size of your workshop: If you have a small workshop, you may want to choose a smaller cabinet so that it doesn’t take up too much space.
  • The type of work you do: If you do a variety of different types of work, you may want to choose a cabinet that has a wider range of tools.

Your budget: Tool cabinets can range in price from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Set a budget for yourself before you start shopping.
