How to choose the right car lift for your car service? Practical guide + checklist!

12 May 2025 by Tomasz Szymański

A car lift is a must-have in any car service. But to choose the right one, looking at the price alone isn’t enough. You need to know what you actually need and what to pay attention to so your lift will serve you reliably for years.

We’ll show you what to focus on when making your choice and compare some of the most popular models. Plus, you can download a handy checklist to make things even easier.

Let’s get started!

1. Types of car lifts – what are your options?

Before choosing a lift, it’s important to understand what types are available. Each one works a bit differently and is best suited for specific tasks or conditions.

  • Two-post lifts

A classic in any car service. They have two columns and arms that support the vehicle from underneath. Perfect for suspension repairs, exhaust work, or engine access. If you run a mechanical car service and need a versatile solution, a two-post lift is a great choice.

  • Four-post lifts

With this type, the vehicle drives onto ramps. Four-post lifts are ideal for wheel alignment and diagnostics. They offer more stability, which is why they’re often used for larger vans. If you handle alignment jobs or need a solid platform — this one’s worth considering.

  • Scissor lifts

Compact and quick. A scissor lift is great for tire changes, brake service, or minor underbody repairs. It doesn’t take up much space and is often mobile. A smart solution for tire services or shops where every square meter counts.

  • Single-post lifts

If space is tight or you need something mobile, a single-post lift is a practical option. It works a bit like a pallet jack — you lift the vehicle and move the lift to where it suits you best. Excellent for bodywork, paint prep, or light mechanical tasks.

2. What should you check before buying a lift?

A car lift isn’t a seasonal tool — it’s something that should serve you for many years. That’s why it’s worth checking a few important things before you buy one. It’ll save you trouble and unexpected costs down the line.

  • Lifting capacity vs. the types of vehicles you service

Not every 3-ton or 4-ton lift will suit every car service. If you mostly work with passenger cars, 3 tons should be enough. But if you often get SUVs or light commercial vehicles, it’s safer to go with 4 tons or more. Better to have a safety margin than to struggle later.

  • Lifting height and working comfort

It’s all about giving yourself enough space to work comfortably. Many lifts raise vehicles to around 190–193 cm, which lets you access the underbody without hunching over. Your back will thank you for it.

  • Floor thickness and available space

Two-post and four-post lifts require a proper concrete base. The standard is 30 cm, but some models with a frame (like the REDATS L-205R) can be installed on a 20 cm slab. Before buying, check your flooring and whether you have enough room to position the equipment.

  • 230V or 400V – what power supply do you need?

If your car service has access to a three-phase (400V) connection, you can choose from any lift. But if you’re working in a garage or smaller space with only 230V, look for single-phase models.

3. Summary

If you’re still unsure which lift will be the best fit for your car service, we’ve prepared a quick comparison of some popular models.
