And piston compressor maintenance is important, as without the compressor most tyre service equipment would not be able to work. This pertains to tyre changers, pneumatic wrenches, as well as loads of other equipment.
These maintenance jobs are relatively easy to carry out. It’s just a few steps to have a fully-working piston compressor that won’t let the user down in the most unexpected moment. Here’s just a few procedures.
It might be a good idea to change the oil in the compressor. Don’t forget that the oil is there both to:
- reduce friction
- grease the internal parts – protecting them against damage
Only piston compressor oil might be used for replacement (check the user’s manual for reference).
The oil change procedure is easy. In most compressors it goes like that:
- Take out the vent’s casing.
- Drain the old oil.
- Fill the tank out with the new oil.
- Put the vent’s casing on again.
Your customers should make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding oil change intervals. In most compressors they are as follows:
– first change: after 100 hours of use (maximum interval),
– next changers: after 300 hours of use (maximum interval).
Don’t forget that the recommendations may vary, depending on the model. It won’t hurt to check manufacturer’s recommendations, particularly those regarding the oil quality and changing intervals.
During the oil change, changing the filter insert might be a good idea. The insert is there to keep the dirt away from the system.
Condition of belts
During a pre-season check, the user may also look at the tension of belts. It should not bent more than 1 cm.
Keeping the compressor clean is important, too. Remember to clean all the external parts of the engine and the compressor. Particles of dust or other dirt can affect the cooling.
Removing the condensate from the filter and the oiler is a good idea, too. Users should do it on a daily basis, at the end of the working day.
Checking the tightness of screws on the pump’s head is a must too. The values can be found in the user’s manual fo the compressor.
